My Take
It's 2012, and I still consider this game one of my personal favorite multiplayer games in history. Maybe it's because I grew up with it! Maybe my personal opinion is quite biased, but... I've certainly had some good memories playing this game and games like it with a friend who could share the passion of yelling at the television in defiance of our video game failures.
It's games like these that make your overall camaraderie better. The trivial things you can spend your time on, cooperating to rise above a common goal, no matter how stupid it is... it's a fantastic way to bond in general. But back then, before PC games and the whole competitive/cooperative scene, there had been video games like Gunstar Heroes to put a smile on your face.
From the very beginning, you're thrown into a excellent little world with all kinds of stuff going on. You've got guns so powerful even the trees get bumped around! Not common guns, but elemental guns, yes? Bear with me! You can have two elements on at one time, between fire/electric/wind (chaser)/and "force". Now, as an example you've got a pair of Fire elements on, right? Your gun shoots great fireballs which explode if you release the button. Let us try electric/wind, your gun essentially forms a square of electricity, continuously hitting the target like an aimbot. If you've got sensible movement while making use of that, you're all set! It is exactly what my buddy and I did; I was the rapid-movement fighter with electric/wind and this guy was electric/fire which is like a fireball DRILL. Fun, right?
There are two modes to select from when you first begin the game, which is Fixed-Mode and Free-Mode. Fixed mode is when you shoot, you're forced to remain still, but the upside is that it's a lot easier to correctly shoot at someone from a specific angle, as opposed to Free mode where you might be frequently walking beyond them working to attain the same effect. Though, free mode is obviously better for movement, and is almost required in Expert mode.
As far as difficulties go, this is certainly one of several game titles that did it Correct on difficulty! It is not difficult because opponents hit harder; they do not. Expert Mode is tricky because of the dodging needed; all the enemies on the screen, lasers shot at you, bombs thrown at you. It's tough!
The bosses are extremely interesting, different sorts to play against. The second boss alone has seven unique shapes! I was JUST playing alone on Expert mode only to nerd-rage at his Eagle shape, where his wings and his tail take various formations in which you have to try to get passed him to the lower side of the tv screen. It sounds effortless until he arises BACKWARDS and his wing manages to pin you to the walls.
It is one of those video games that every serious game addict should really play at least once. Particularly if the game addict has friends. ... A friend. Singular. ... Get your hands on an emulator and play it!
